Colour Coordination for Indian Fashion - What It Actually Means
Colour coordination is the practice of combining colours in an outfit so they complement each other rather than clash. For Indian fashion, this is more nuanced than Western dressing because of the rich, saturated hues in ethnic wear - a deep magenta lehenga calls for very different accessories than a pastel silk saree.
Indian skin tones have warm undertones - ranging from golden to olive to deep brown. Warm-toned skin generally looks best in earthy colours (terracotta, mustard, burgundy, forest green, rust) and rich jewel tones (emerald, deep teal, plum). Cool pastels like powder blue and lavender work better on cooler or lighter skin tones. This guide breaks it down by skin tone with specific colour recommendations.
The most common colour coordination mistakes in Indian wardrobes: wearing too many prints in the same pattern scale, clashing warm and cool tones in one outfit (e.g., a warm coral dupatta with a cool pink suit), and over-accessorising without matching the metal tone of the jewellery to the outfit. The guide covers fixes for each.
