What does a wedding stylist do?

The role is broader than most people expect. A good wedding stylist works across every function - Haldi, Mehendi, Sangeet, Wedding, Reception - and thinks about how each look reads in person, in photos, and on video. The core responsibilities are:

• Event-wise moodboards - a visual direction for each function covering silhouette, colour palette, fabric and mood
• Outfit sourcing - shortlisting and arranging outfits from designers, boutiques and rental houses to match the brief and budget
• Jewellery and accessory curation - choosing the pieces, footwear and dupatta drapes that complete each look
• MUA brief - giving your makeup artist clear hair and makeup references so beauty matches the outfit
• Groom and family coordination - keeping the groom, parents and siblings visually in step with the bridal palette
• On-day support - dressing, draping, styling adjustments and quick fixes at each event

On the wedding morning, what a stylist actually delivers is calm. While the bride is in makeup, I am steaming outfits in running order, laying out jewellery and footwear for each event, checking that the dupatta is pinned so it will not slip during the pheras, and keeping the groom and family looks coordinated for the group photographs. The outfit was decided months ago, so the day itself is pure execution and the bride only has to be present.

Think of the stylist as the creative director of your wardrobe. A photographer captures the day; a stylist makes sure there is something worth capturing.

The two roles work beautifully together. A designer might make your bridal lehenga; the stylist decides whether that lehenga is the right choice for your venue lighting and body type, then builds the jewellery, footwear, drape and the four other event looks around it. When in the process does a wedding stylist help?

Most Indian brides book 3 to 6 months ahead, while NRI brides book 6 to 12 months ahead to allow for remote sourcing and shipping.

The journey usually looks like this:

• Discovery and moodboard (3 to 6 months out): a discovery call, a style questionnaire, then an event-wise moodboard. A bridal moodboard starts at ₹5,499.
• Sourcing and fittings (2 to 4 months out): shortlisting outfits, booking appointments, coordinating fittings, and finalising jewellery and accessories.
• Final coordination (2 to 4 weeks out): confirming the MUA brief, family looks, and a run sheet for each event.
