How I Use AI Virtual Try-On as a Stylist (and Where It Falls Short)

As a NIFT-trained personal stylist who has worked with 120+ wedding clients and 50+ Bollywood projects, I've tested most of the major virtual try-on tools available for Indian fashion. Here is my honest assessment.

Where AI virtual try-on genuinely helps my clients:

  • NRI brides shopping remotely - A bride in the US wanting to preview lehenga silhouettes from Indian designers can use virtual try-on to shortlist before flying in for the final fitting. This saves trips and narrows decision fatigue.
  • Colour visualization on Indian skin tones - AI try-on tools do a reasonable job showing how jewel tones, pastels, and deep hues look against different skin tones. I use this for initial palette discussions in colour analysis sessions.
  • Silhouette decisions - Whether a client looks better in an A-line or a straight-cut lehenga, virtual try-on gives them a visual anchor before committing to a tailor or designer.
  • Creating digital mood boards - I layer virtual try-on previews with fabric swatches and jewellery references to build complete looks for clients who think visually.

Where AI virtual try-on does NOT replace a stylist:

  • It cannot replicate the drape of a Kanjivaram silk saree or the weight of heavy embroidery - fabric behaviour on your body requires an actual fitting.
  • It does not account for your individual proportions the way a NIFT-trained eye can - a virtual try-on may show the garment "fitting" when the neckline, waist placement, or hem would need adjustment in reality.
  • Jewellery try-on is fairly accurate for standalone pieces, but layered Indian jewellery sets (maang tikka + necklace + earrings + haath phool together) do not yet render well.
